Capturing the Special Autumn

Lingyu, MAPH 2024

Since September, my graduate studies have been moving at a rapid pace, and it's hard

to believe that it's been nearly two months since the start of the academic year. With the

passage of time, Chicago's temperature has dropped from 68-73 degrees Fahrenheit to 30-39 degrees Fahrenheit, and the trees along the streets have transitioned from green to yellow and red. Some corners of the school are also beginning to showcase noteworthy scenery.

This is the staircase at the entrance of the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy,

and Practice. Gradient yellow leaves have piled up at the intersection of the steps, and a solitary maple leaf has fallen on the uppermost step.

Café Logan, located on the first floor of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts,

offers a tranquil and comfortable atmosphere complemented by delicious coffee. This hidden

gem serves as my go-to spot for refueling during my Animation class, offering a balanced

selection of salads, tasty sandwiches, and sushi.

Cello cases placed in the corridor of the concert hall. Amidst the predominantly gray and

white surroundings, the red cases stand out, brimming with passion. The melodic music

repeatedly emanates from the concert hall, and I stand at the door, hesitating to leave, not

wanting to disrupt the elegant songs.

A squirrel by the roadside is happily savoring its "spoils." Surprisingly, many of the

squirrels in Chicago are not very afraid of people. You can closely observe the actions of these small animals.

Harper Memorial Library is a library without books. The learning room on the third floor,

which is reminiscent of Hogwarts, is a place where I wonder if it can help me concentrate on my studies better. In the sunlight, its castle-like exterior adds even more charm to it.

The UChicago Bookstore is definitely a must-visit place!! Not only does it offer clothing

and accessories with the University of Chicago branding, but the second floor also boasts a

diverse selection of extracurricular books. For example, you can find comics, novels, board

games, and even children's literature, etc. Whatever you can think of, this place can satisfy

almost all your needs. It's a place worth stepping into and getting lost in time and time again!

At the entrance of John Crerar Library, there stands a unique structure in the middle of

the lawn. Initially, I thought it was like different buildings composing a city, presented through a fisheye lens to depict the makeup of a city. I marveled at the cyberpunk-style of this structure. After some research, I learned that this is the "Grande Disco" from 1968. The creator, Arnaldo, described it as beautiful yet unsettling, with no fixed concept to define the artwork. According to the concepts I've recently learned about in art, my confusion gradually transformed into understanding. Different people bring different interpretations because everyone has different experiences. I hope this structure can offer you various experiences as well.

The changing and falling of leaves continually remind us that the warm season has

passed, and the end of the semester is approaching. Even in the face of winter and solitude, we must always seek the sunshine and remain positive and cheerful.
